Grownass Man

I discovered this one by accident and instantly connected with what I heard. Then, I recognized one of the members on the album cover. A quick look into the band confirmed it is Justin Vernon and I was very surprised. It’s really cool to hear someone so respected in the Indie world stretching his blues legs. Anyone looking for something groundbreaking and completely original will be let down. Anyone expecting to compare this to Bon Iver or Volcano Choir will be mislead. However, if you like a good, bluesy song, I think you’ll really connect with this album like I did. I really respect Vernon for getting together with his friends and doing whatever he wants to musically when the mood strikes. If he constantly tried to please everyone with Bon Iver-esque music, I think it would be stale and boring.

This album is awesome. It's very well put together as people say below but for me, the difference for me is that out of all of the albums that I recieved for Christmas, this one took no time to fall in love with. It has been by far the most played in the past two weeks at my house. I love the old style rock and melodies mixed with soul and some jamming out. Makes me want to join in!

Justin Vernon has always been up there as one of my favorite music artists of my generation. He never ceases to impress me. Love this Album!!

Unique take on Blues, … this is definitely and "add" to anyones collection.

I have not been this excited about a new record in ages. This is what I love. They take a widely used formula and still make it sound fresh. I previewed all songs and bought it on the spot.

The Shouting Matches have a fresh take on an all-too-familiar but instantly lovable Southern Rock sound. Hope they stay true to their roots!

Being from Eau Claire, WI, and a big Bon Iver fan, I had heard plenty of buzz about The Shouting Matches over the last few years, but never actually heard them until we streamed their Coachella set. Frankly, I was a little surprised, disappointed, and I guess skeptical, when I first heard their traditional blue-sy sound, especially because I've never liked the blues, and I'm a big fan of Bon Iver's innovative and genre-defying sound. However, I really enjoyed watching the boys jam out up there on stage, and decided to listen to the album the next day. I have to say that it's really growing on me...I could see myself blaring this out of the stereo while washing the car in the driveway and cleaning out the garage with brats on the grill, then sitting down to enjoy it with a nice, cold drink...it kind of has that good ol' summer Americana feel to it. It's not mind-blowing like Bon Iver, but just great "hangin' out" music--actually a welcome change of pace from all of the fairly intense Indie music that's out there.

This album, like Vernon's other albums, reminds me of so many other songs I've heard, yet he always creates something new. The guitar work is outstanding--something new on every track. Great lyrics, great vocals, great mood to the entire album. And the title, "Grownass Man" is one of the best!

Wow. All this talk about modern blues is absolutely right. Justin Vernon and this trio have given life to a genre of music rarely given the credit it deserves. I was a bit skeptical at first, since this is a departure from Bon Iver and Vernon's well known style of music, but I was absolutely blown away by the quality of this album. My two favorites are Seven Sisters and I Need A Change. I think we see a side of Justin he can't express in Bon Iver, not to mention we get to hear his voice outside of the falsetto we're used to, which to be honest I think I prefer when he doesn't sing in a falsetto (listen to his old stuff and you'll see, Hazletons, and DeYarmond Edison, and his self titled album tracks). Expect more to come as well, he's made an effort to make it very clear that this is not a side-project as many people believe it to be. This may very well be the kind of music we hear from him from now on, which I would be absolutely okay with.
