  • Double Concerto excellence

    By JackRSkellington
The new Double Concerto for Violin and Cello is performed with fresh ink. The concerto is from 2010 and was commissioned as a dance piece for the Netherlands Dance Theater. The performance of the soloists and orchestra under Jurjen Hempel in this studio recording done after a long tour is really first rate. The soloists Fain and Sutter excel in this unique concerto which really show off the soloists in the duets and not really in the orchestral movements. The Double Concerto is paired with the Glass first piano concerto from around 2000 called the Tirol Concerto for piano and strings. It's a top shelf piece as well, though this is a previously released recording from "Dennis Russell Davies performs Philip Glass". By my count only three of Glass's concerti haven't been included I this series: Concerto Project Vol. 1: cello, timpani Vol.2: piano no.2, harpsichord Vol.3: concerto grosso, saxophone quartet Vol.4: Double Concerto, Tirol Vol.5? The two violin concertos? The second cello concerto?
