  • Recordings have changed the way we listen...

Up to the end of the first half of the 20th century, multiple performers would play a single piece completely differently. That's part of what made live concerts so exciting! You never heard a single piece the same way twice! But now with recordings, people listen to a piece played the same way over and over again - then they come to think that's the "correct" way it should be played.. the way the "composer intended". To an extent, the performance and expression of some of the major works have become standardized as well. Listening to two separate recordings of the same piece... it's difficult to tell much difference between them, EXCEPT for Lang Lang's recordings. I have such great respect for his interpretations, even if I question their efficacy. His musical ideas are new and fresh. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT HE'S GOING AGAINST THE COMPOSERS INTENT. The extent of musical expression that the composer has intended is already written into the score. The raw and human aspect of music is only brought by the performer, and I think Lang Lang does that better than most big name performers today, particularly with this work. I've heard many different recordings of this piece, and I finally feel like I've heard a unique performance. Well worth the $1.29

  • I was once a non-believer

I first caught a bit of Lang Lang on PBS a little while ago, and while I thought his playing was competent, his body language and facial expressions were so over-the-top that they bordered on grotesque. However, after listening to this rendition of the Heroic Polonaise, I will have to say that I rate it as my favorite, above my other versions (Argerich debut recital, Rubenstein, Ashkenazy, and even my beloved Brailowsky. Every note sounds clear, and I actually agree with many of his stylistic choices - they bring a fresh outlook, and the melody sings through for me. I was once a non-believer, and I still need more convincing, but for this one performance, I give a hearty endorsement to mr. Lang Lang.
  • It just confirms that I like Rubinstein

I happened to like this particular piece and listen to it quite often. Three artists that I listen to most (for the 'heroic waltz') are Argerich, Kissin, and Rubinstein. Among them, I like the version played by Rubinstein the most. Lang Lang can be really good at times but cannot predict whether I'm going to pick up a good version or a bad one just by looking at the album cover. His version of 'Heroic Waltz' did not sound all that heroic and some of the details were mundanely portrayed. It's like listening to Gould playing Mozart or something. His album Dragon Songs was quite good though. I would like to attend a live performance of Lang Lang once I get a chance. I may understand his music better. I guess some artists shine more on stage and he may be one of them. Meanwhile, I would have to listen to this song a couple more times to see if I really dislike it. However, he does not strike as a performer that I will seek out for a spiritual lift like Rubinstein, Richter, Kapell, Argerich, Horowitz, and Gould (lately some of Yundi Li's music sounds good too). Definitely want to keep an eye on him though. Like I said, some of his music is good.
  • Sony should be ashamed

Hard to believe Mr. Lang's former label dumped Yundi Li after Mr. Lang protested "I want to be the only Chinese pianist here!!!" I assume this is his first recording on the Sony label after striking a $3 million dollar deal. Anyway, if you want to hear this music by Chopin, go listen to Artur Rubenstein or Ashkenazy, there you will find Chopin as he is meant to be heard.
  • Okay, your CD is entitled _____???

For those who "intellectually bash" Lang Lang’s performances, I have one question: Where is your CD? Please let us know so we can “kindly” review your vast repertoire of music and consider whether or not we will support your musical contribution to the world. Although I am not in the same musical league as Mr. Lang, I am a very good classical pianist and I appreciate the fact that his music, along with the music of many others who put in the time and work to be artistic, brings wonderful attention to the craft I adore. He may not play as “perfect” as your favorite pianist. So What! Beautiful music is beautiful music. Please learn to enjoy it. If you want us to “enjoy” your great, “better than Lang Lang playing,” please let us know where we can listen and provide “kind” feedback. Best to you.

TY Chopin and Lang Lang from one who can only marvel at the beauty and talent. My toes are alive and I am energized. What more can we ask; those of us so untalented as to only appreciate music? Wish I had been in Atlanta.
