I haven’t lied down and put on headphones and listened to an album in its entirety in decades until just now. I was born 1970 and grew up in a house of new wave in the 80’s, but as I learned to play guitar in my early teens I also grew to appreciate rock guitarists. I had this duality of musical tastes that my friends couldn’t appreciate. I always got more into an album than the actual players, if that makes sense. I had a Badlands album in my collection, so I was familiar with Mr. Lee. One of this albums tracks showed up on my YouTube suggestions. I hadn’t heard any of Jakes music since back in the day. Anyways, here I am listening to the album and loving it. Saw a video of all the guitars and amps that went into this album and it was well worth it. The band does an amazing job supporting the songs. This album isn’t missing a thing. Thank you Jake for staying in the game, and growing and sharing your gift. This is a special album.

First the good: Jake E. Lee is awesome! The riffs, the groove, the creativity is, in my opinion, the best he has ever recorded. His band is more than capabable. Now the bad: Where Patina went wrong is in the sound quality. It reminds me of the old Bad Company recordings which were always terrible. Most of the songs sound like they put the band in a large room, put all the microphones in the front of the room and stuck the singer 10' behind the drums with a $20 Kareokee machine. Everything is too muddy. With todays technology there is no excuse! Darren has got chops but it seems the producer kept him in check and didn't really let him do his thing. You could hear him, barely, in a few of the songs let loose but it was very limited and short lived. Too much of the same in every song and sometimes it was hard to tell one song from the next except Speedbag and Punchclown. I really want to like this new release but it's so hard to listen to because of the above mentioned problems. In my opinion Max Norman failed the band and what could have been an album to rival KXM will not win over any new listeners that are not already Jake E. Lee fans.
