I discovered St. Vincent with MASSEDUCTION and have been astounded by everything I have heard so far. Her work is compelling in every way... technically, musically, lyrically, thematically. This album is very consistent and loaded with great tracks. Los Ageless is an instant stunner, and songs like Slow Disco, Young Lover, and Fear the Future are tragically gorgeous. I also really like the MassEducation album with the songs reworked.
  • Production ruins what could be good songs

Annie Clark knows how to write music, knows how to sing with passion, knows how to play a mean guitar. Here, all of it is buried under a slick 21st century urban-chic production that was supposed to make her more "cool" and "accessible." (That and the ridiculous album cover). It didn't work. Hence, the release of the far superior piano-and-voice verson that was released a year later. There's more than a little sadness and self-pity in here, which doesn't work as well as the anger and sarcasm that she usually exhibits. I get it; she endured a tough breakup. But she's at her best when she is sardonic and pitiless toward her subject matter.
