A different direction
Compared to, say, the tunes on Queen of the Minor Key, her flatter voicing here and the scarcity of her distinctive phrasing disappointed me. This collection does not showcase her immense talent or the virtuosity of her band as well as previous albums have done.
Where is the Passion?
Ok. I've tried to like Eilen Jewell. She has a pleasant enough voice and when I saw she had made a blues album I thought 'Finally, something she can really get into' but what I found was the same emotionless delivery. Her band is tight and the potential is just beneath the surface but where is the passion and the fire? Perhaps this is the way they sing the blues in Idaho.
