Just got to see this band live over the weekend at the Elkhart Jazz Festival. They put on a very tasty show. We enjoyed the wonderful tone and phrasing that Mallinger wrung from his classic tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones. He seemed tuned in to the moment throughout the show. Carrothers' dynamism was frequently and appealing apparent without overwhelming the rest of the band. I think this CD accurately reflects the quality of work we witnessed in that show. The recording has a warm, intimate quality that welcomes you to your favorite seat at your favorite club. It is a keeper and will be on my frequently played list for quite a while.
