  • A "Covert" Hit Album?

Like many reading I get introduced to newe bands and music mostly from television and films, having abandoned radio some 20 years ago....and so while watching one of the final episodes for " Covert Affairs " did I become intrigued by a track that was incredible: " Dust " Although dark and much more heavy metal, there are some great tracks on this album...including the demos. This is a "must buy".

Unlike his other album with his title, this outing lives up to this description and defines it. It seems Mr. Numan has finally put everything he knows and learned into tight laser focus to drill these pieces into your brain. The mix is perfect with the bass and treble balancing each other with an exactitude he has previously lacked. From one moment to the next, and one song to the next, this album is flawless. Enjoy cold metal heads!!!

It took several albums, but it seems Gary has finally found a perfect balance in his music. Splinter has just the right mix of the "old" Numan qualities and the industrial dark-waves of sound he has in recent years immersed himself. After the brilliance of Sacrifice and Exile, I was a bit disappointed with many of the songs on "Pure." Splinter is the album I had hoped Gary would make right after, but alas, it wasn't to be. In fact, after previewing and listening to tracks from Jagged and Dead Son Rising; I was ready to write reviews of them with the title: "R.I.P. Gary Numan, 1958-2000," because the artist I had known and loved since 1980 was clearly gone. The new Numan just wasn't to my liking. But I am pleased to say that my reports of his death were highly exaggerated! Perhaps it just took Gary a few albums' worth of material to find his "voice" and true touch, within the very genre that he himself influenced. Splinter is dark, and heavy, and hard-hitting. But it is excellent. It's like Switchblade Symphony's "Serpentine Gallery" (another amazing album) on steroids and Red Bull. Bravo, Gary. I won't go so far as to say Splinter is your very best ever; but it's pretty high on the list.

iTunes charges more for this "DELUXE EDITION," but fails to Deliver on the promise! Firstly The Album is Top Shelf...but, then so is the cheaper $9.99 release! They charge for a "Digital Booklet," yet don't include it in the download, after payment is finalized, no grievance support either to 'fix' any error! Buy the cheaper version!

After listening to this album for almost 3 months I still think it's amazing that each of the last 5 or 6 albums Gary takes you on a new journey. Each journey is so full of surprises and small unexpected turns that I strongly recommend you enjoy it with a good set of headphones or in a space without background noises so that you you don't miss any of the twists and/or turns! I love the addition of more strings in this album. We all agree on Gary's voice, unquestionably something incredibly unique so let me point one example out which I think is the icing on Gary's cake: My Last Day after the 3rd minute to the end. WOW....

Throughout the vagaries of his career and various favoritisms of radio & vidya television; Gary Numan has remained true to his slightly off-kilter, not so well lit impression of the world. Those of us who KNOW the world isn't all fields of daisy's and happy little pony's have loved, nay - TREASURED, GN's trolling the depths of his own private various malfunctioning views of the world & Splinter is no excpetion to this wonderful platter of delights... if you don't mind looking towards where the shadows move on their own & your mind makes it's own choices... Enjoy.

I absolutely love this CD. The CD cover art is sooo cool and the music matches the feeling of the cover art. The music is powerful and a little creepy with an electronic twist. It feels like Gary Numan meets American Horror Story. It's a GREAT combination. I am going to be listening to this CD for a long long time. It's so deep and layered beautifully. Well crafted Mr. Numan! Buy it! You will not be disappointed!!!

Great new album. Love Hurt Bleed is amazing. Just saw him in DC supporting this new album. Best live show I have seen in a long time.

I'm always apprehensive, when an artist whose old work I like a lot produces something new. So many great musicians lose their mojo and relevance after awhile. This album is just really good though. There are many tracks, which even with the newer, NIN-influenced instrumentation, are just so clearly Gary Numan songs, that they fit perfectly with his great hits of the 80's. If you have forgotten why you loved him in the first place, this album will remind you.
