Lost In Transition is a fantastic album. I have been listening to this band since 1996, and I love how their music contains to mature as Matt and Leigh develop as songwriters and performers. It's also nice to hear a true band album with songs written and performed without the outside influence of a record label. There's a pureness that results from the environment in which Lost In Transition was created. This time around, there are no covers and no overblown studio ornateness. Instead, we get songs from the hearts of the artists, performed honestly without a lot of studio dabbling. The band also dip their toes in folk and country this time around on a couple of tracks, most notably on "Failure" which has some tasty slide guitar. Leigh often mentions how classic country artists are influences on her, so it's nice to see this side of the band, only hinted out previously (seek out the band's re-recording of their classic song "Trust" on Song From The Book). Lyrically, the band tackles spirituality in a wonderfully nuanced way, the pain of loss, and the hope found in love. "Give It Back" is the highlight of the album for me, as it describes honestly the seeming contradiction of how far away God feels at times even though He really is near. The trust and hope displayed in the face of despair is beautiful. It's easy to see why "I Do" is a bonus track, as it's lyrically sunnier than the rest of the tracks on the album, but it's still a really nice love song that will fit nicely on your next mix for that special one in your life. My only slight disappointment is that Matt didn't pick up the cello more on this album. I appreciate the desire to strip the arrangements down for this album, but I really enjoy his cello playing. Still, it's a small disappointment, and probably not something most people will care about. Is Lost In Transition worth the wait? Yes. In fact, the wait makes the songs seem even more poignant. So, go ahead, download the whole album, slip on your headphones, and lose yourself for a hour.

Not as much the "wall of sound" vibe as Divine Discontent...Lost In Transition is all about the details, and how they are intertwined. The lyrics, the vocals, the instrumentaton. As you take the journey the album takes you on, it's easy to understand the reason for the original title of Strange Conversation, as well as the final title of Lost In Transition. Sixpence has a knack of making even the "deepest" song or darkest subject still have a happy or fun sound to it----as if to always give the message of hope, or being found after you're lost. Lost in Transition is Sixpence at their best.

Sixpence's best work by far. Soooo good.
