  • Hello Mrs. Soul

Not only did Merry Clayton make a Neil Young song danceable, she turned it into a conversation. Her feverish performance on "Whatever" is so epic...that's how you're supposed to end an album.

I stumbled across this album in my Dad's vinyl collection. The raw emotion in her cover of Neil's "Southern Man" is extremely powerful. Purchase this album and prepare to be blown away.

Wow, I wonder if Lynyrd Skynyrd would have sung "a Southern man don't need HER around" (in Sweet Home Alabama) had they heard Merry Clayton's cover of the Neil Young song. I think the Van Zandts would have minded their manners. The song takes on a whole new meaning with a soul diva at the mic. BTW, Merry Clayton's initial claim to fame was singing backup/duet with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones' "Giimmie Shelter." She recorded an awesome cover of that song, too.
