    Grand music magnificently recorded. But the limitations of iTunes and computer replay are all evident with this music. Music squeezed into the medium. The only thing missing is the grandeur.

    this definatley the best recording on itunes MTT makes great use of all the recording artists so the acoustics are amazing the two choruses are well rehersed as well as the rest of the orchestra the soloists though sound like they are trying too hard to sound German so especially the bass and others come off as nasaly. the Alles Vergangliche comes off great especially the two soprano parts. the best recordings of this piece are definately done by the seattle symphony but aren't on iTunes

    Wow!! I am almost speechless at this recording. The finales of the two movements are very well percieved by MTT and I love the mellow sound on the offstage brass. One of the most solid Horn sections I've heard. This puts other Mahlerian conductors to shame. (not meanly). Great job everyone!!

    After being at the concert, to hear this amazing performance in my home-with such fidelity to the original-takes my breath away. All the singers, choirs and individual voices, are so vibrant and uplifting. As usual with MTT, voice and instrument do not compete, only enhance each other. This is a keepsake from an incredible evening.

    I cannot wait for the SACD version, so i decided to buy this digital version (also, it will cost me double if the SACD version will be shipped to my location). I'll gonna say that this recording of Mahler's 8th is probably one of the best in thw world! You can feel the emotion within the symphony thru this interpretation (especially the Chorus Mysticus, which is my most favorite part). Also, you can see how precise MTT made for this recording. Eventhough it didn't have a strong Organ sound on the Chorus Mysticus (just like Solti's recording), you still feel the solemnity and feelings deep inside of the symphony. Finally th Mahler Cycle of San Francisco Symphony is complete.

    I was trying to get tickets for this performance. For my mother, I would have needed orchestra on the aisle. Dream ON! No way. I gave up. I went to the mailbox and found a blank envelope with no return address. I opened it. There were TWO orchestra tickets, mid-hall, right on the aisle, for a matinee! !!! Who would have any idea? Turns out my punked-out niece enters any contest she hears on the radio, and won these expensive tickets to...whut-everrrr. Aunt Carol was into that stuff, so she dropped them in the mail to me. She loves surprises like that. What a MIRACLE! The concert of course was awesome, and it didn't matter much if Mom occasionally hummed along (she's very old). The most memorable moment was when MTT suddenly swung around and started conducting US! YIKES, was this supposed to be a singalong? Oh, silly me, he was conducting the organist in the rear. However to see standing the huge choir, all the soloists, and MTT conducting like his life depended on it....a tsunami of shock and awe!, I blew $60 on a print that a SF Chronicle reporter caught of the MTT conducting moment. It's hanging right over my computer screen. Am tempted to download this, but think I'll get the actual CD package. For my system, it deserves the CD player... and hope the video is in it. ;-)

    The sound quality is extremely high on this recording. Michael Tilson Thomas has released and other Grammy winning performance here. I have been waiting a very long time for this. I have many recording and this one is very high on my list. From the first note you can hear every nuance and the timbre of all the forces woven into a distinct tapestry that is pure Mahler at his full glory. I own the entire series on SACD (which I highly recommend). The entire work is a blessing for all of those who revere this work and those who have never experienced this. Part I - in all its reverence to the Creator... to Part II - and the redemption of man through the purity of the eternal woman. All that is impossible is found here. Mahler's love letter to his dear Alma shines here. Listen to this and you will cry tears of joy and understand what love is.

    This cycle has been quite good, but I will never understand why anyone would pay $19.99 for this. These are not CDs and yet the distributor still pretends as if this is a two-CD set via download.

    MTT has had his up and downs with his Mahler cycle but this is one of his better ventures. It is a shame however that they couldn't wait until the Maazel recording was released. I'm not a fan of Lorin's latest Mahler readings but he at least deserves his day considering how much he's given to music. While MTT's recording isn't as sleepy as Maazel's it's not as soaring and glorious as the master Boulez. Thomas takes a careful middle of the road approach which is just fine. His eye to detail is evedent alough it's a shame that one can't hear it as well as the phyiscal SACD copy. The perormances all around are good and there really isn't anything to not make you want to by it. This album gets high marks. -Bz
