This is probably the best performance from the new NYP set. Tempi are slow but the work holds up to Maazel's distortions. It is somewhat similar to Kubelik's uncharacteristic and glacial 7th with the same orchestra.

This is a wonderful performance by the Philharmonic. The brass bring their classic, sinewy New York Phil sound, and the strings sound magnificent.

I never did like the New York Philharmonic. Phil Myers uses too much vibrato, Stanley Drucker also used too much (I see no reason for him to have used any at all). Lorin took quite a few tempos too slowly. There are many better recordings than this one, such as the SFS, Berlin Philharmonic, and Milwaukee Symphony performances.
