  • It's Not Bad

This cd was released in 1994 and it's not all bad really. Michael did score a pop hit with the closing jazz inflected track "Love Is The Power" but I feel that song, as good and as popular as it was, really didn't belong here. I'm a bit of a purest when it comes to the cohesion of an album and he should have waited until he was ready to release another straight-ahead pop album should that track had been released. That aside this cd offered a glimpse into what Michael could do with a standard, he would re-visit the bulk of these songs on his independent release of swing arranged holiday classics but at the time of this release he was the power-pop god. He would release an album of arias a few years after this but before that he recorded "Ave Maria" as a duet with Placido Domingo and Michael would prove that next to a seasoned tenor he could hold his own. If "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" sounds like a page from the Mariah Carey songbook that's no surprise, she arranged it. This cd is formula Michael Bolton but again, it's not all bad.
