  • SHE IS THE BEST WHITE SINGER PERIOD

It’s time somebody got the info right about this exact cd. The first 11 songs are the ONLy songs on the original Memphis cd. The 12th song recorded at the same time as the other 11 is What Do You Do When Love Dies. This 12th song never made it onto the original cd. This is the ONLY other song recorded on the Memphis sessions. The other songs are from Longing and are bonus songs added. As for Dusty she wasn’t 1 in a million…she was the only “one” who has ever had such a voice. No need to try to describe it. It’s impossible. You just have to listen.

I can't believe this album was so ignored when it came out. Now it's a classic…Go figure. Dusty at her vocal best, though I know some feel the songs are too "female as victim". Makes you wonder if Dusty chose them for a reason. She had a very turbulent life. The arrangements are incredible. Those guys at American Sound were some incredible musicians. Now the studio is gone, and on it's former glory sits a Dollar General Store. But they are thinking of putting a plaque up…what a joke. Anyway... great album. My favorite song is the Randy Newman penned "I don't want to hear about it anymore."

I bought this at Barnes & Noble today after hearing the preview clips and was just astounded. Dusty's voice is incredible, and the production here suits her so well. the remastering is also really quality. I can see now why this is regarded as one of the best albums of all time. I recommend all of it as there's really not a bad track in the whole bunch - my favorites are Just a Little Lovin', Son of a Preacher Man and Breakfast in Bed.
  • A timeless and legendary LP, expanded with top-notch and ultra-rare bonus tracks

The original 11-track Dusty In Memphis LP continues to glow in its deserved legendary status as a soulful and well-produced collection of tunes way ahead of their time. This Deluxe Edition includes three additional tracks recorded with the incredible Wexler/Dowd/Mardin production team ("Willie and Laura Mae Jones" and "That Old Sweet Roll (Hi-De-Ho)" - both minor hits stateside - as well as an outtake from the original Memphis sessions). It also includes two tracks recorded sometime after the release of her Memphis follow-up A Brand New Me with R&B/Soul experts Gamble & Huff. However, the absolute delight to be found on this Deluxe Edition would be the long-shelved tracks from the Jeff Barry sessions Dusty recorded in the first half of 1971. These tracks were to comprise what would have been her third and final album with Atlantic Records (along with four of the bonus tracks from the 1992 Deluxe Edition of A Brand New Me) and it is believed that the masters were destroyed in the tragic Atlantic storage facility fire in 1978 (along with Dusty's reading of the Bee Gee's "To Love Somebody"). It was not until the mid-1990s that producer Jeff Barry revealed in an interview that he kept stereo reference copies of all the tracks - and thank goodness he did, as he and Dusty recorded some top-notch material here that very well may have taken her career to its next level of greatness. "I'll Be Faithful" has infectious and soul-driven vocals from Dusty along with a very catchy arrangement and chorus and easily could have launched this album into at least moderate success. Other gems include her definitive rendition of Carole King's "You've Got A Friend" (recorded before James Taylor took the song to the top of the charts), the anthemic "Love Shine Down" (quite possibly one of Dusty's finest recordings), the gospel-infused "I Found My Way" (Through The Darkness), the seductive "Make It With You" (a beautiful cover of the Bread original), the rockable "Natchez Trace" (the vocals sound a bit unfinished toward the end of this track, but gritty and gutsy nonetheless), the folksy "Live Here With You," the bittersweet "Have A Good Life, Baby", and the feisty "All The King's Horses." All told, the Jeff Barry sessions are strong enough to warrant their own disc, though including them on this Deluxe Edition of the Memphis sessions was a wise way to ensure they reached a wider audience. Dusty In Memphis is one of the great pop/soul LPs of our time, and this Deluxe Edition is an absolute essential.

I'm so glad this version is available here. All the tracks are standout, not one throwaway in the bunch and the bonus tracks really add, most of the extra songs are from an unreleased album, abandoned really, to be titled "Longing." Rhino did an amazing job remastering, there are so many songs here that I could just break down into minute detail but that would be rather boring and I'm afraid I'll timeout. So I'll make it simple by saying look past the obvious hits and delve into album cuts. "Don't Forget About Me" will be an ear worm, the Bossa Nova treatment for "The Windmills Of Your Mind" is haunting, the pathos of "What Do You Do When Love Dies," the bluesy raunchy feel of "That Old Sweet Roll," her sweet covers of Bread and Carole King, this album and all it's bonus track glory defines why Dusty will forever be the queen of blue-eyed soul.

Just got this album today and I have to say that I am very impressed with it. The sound is awesome now that it has been remastered. I would recommend it to people who have never listened to her songs before. I can't believe I was missing out on this!
