I felt that, although overall an excellent recording, the boy solo was a tiny bit forced and pushed, taking the music out of context. The text translates to a famous Psalm, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, etc...," however, I felt more like he was saying "The Lord got me lost in the valley and now I'm annoyed." The tenors have great control of the high notes in the men's section but the intonation of the Bass entrance was a tiny bit sharp, more than likely from the excitement of line. The women's sections were beautiful, except for the lack of volume. It would have helped if the choir had taken every dynamic up a level just to be heard and understood over the orchestra. Clarity of text was also occasionally an issue. I have sung this piece and, understanding its treacherous moments (because I have DEFINITELY encountered them!), found this to be a decent handling of Bernstein's repertoire. I would recommend as a learning tool about dynamics, balance, and character of music for any music major.
