What Went Wrong
I was so excited for this album. It had been three years since we had seen anything. When Gimme came out, I enjoyed it, but I didn’t want the whole album to have as many effects as Gimme. The Altar was so raw, and is still beautiful to this day. Then, LWYDTM (Look What You’re Doing to Me) came out, and I didn’t enjoy it. Francis and the Lights did not go well with her voice at all. The whole concept of LWYDTM was cool, but not well executed. And then Contaminated came out. Contaminated is BANKS’ best song in my opinion, just her voice, and the perfect amount of auto tune / effects her voice needs. And I thought that this could be a good album, if it kept up with Contaminated. That wasn’t the case. When I first played the album and heard Till Now, I knew I would not like the album. It was so bass heavy, which I normally like, but not for a song like it. Any songs that weren’t heavily edited just were too bland. They didn’t have anything to them and were very forgettable. I do like some songs, like Godless, Propaganda, and Contaminated. But overall, I didn’t want this to be an album where I had to skip through as much as I did skip. Stroke was okay, the beat was nice, but she isn’t using enough true instruments in these songs. It is base ridden to where you want to turn it down, which is not want you want in a song like this. The Fall was also a good song, but you can’t tell what she is saying. This is another complaint. I like music I can sing to. This isn’t that. With The Altar, I knew all the words by heart, just because I knew what she was saying. With III, I looked up the lyrics, and sometimes couldn’t even follow along. Even though this was BANKS’ album, I felt like I didn’t get enough BANKS. I really hope this is not the direction she is heading in for her fourth album. If this had more songs like Contaminated, I would’ve loved it, because it would have been the perfect mix. Like with The Altar, there were a few slow songs mixed in, which made it so beautiful. I am very sad about the turnout of this album, but am still excited to she was she has in store for future projects.
