This record reminds me a bit of Elvis Costello's "Spike" – not just because of the cover art, but also lyrically. "Dave" could sit right next to "Veronica" in terms of story telling. And while Paul McCartney didn't co-write "Dave" with Joe (like he did on Veronica), it sure sounds like he could have. Speaking of not-co-writing, "Friend Better" sounds like Donald Fagen of Steely Dan would feel at-home singing it on one of his records. (These are my two favorite tracks.) Joe also reaches back to his early days on "Fabulously Absolute" The rest of the record sounds like it could be the foundation of a Joe-penned Broadway musical, with "Big Black Cloud" being the big opening number. (Those are my next two favorite tracks.) The only track that I truly do not care for is the title track – Fool.
  • 3 stars from a die hard fan....

After his last record, the amazing Fast Forward (his best effort in 25 years), I was ever so excited to listen to the new record. I've listened to this 3 times through now, and although there are some great moments in some of the songs, there is nothing that really compares with his last 2 original albums, Fast Forward and Rain. I'll see soon if the songs are better live...I hope so. If you don't have "Fast Forward, do yourself a favor and get that instead of Fool.

Grateful for introspective melody of medicine that is Fool. My 21st century digital disease symptoms are fleeting now from pressure waves created by piano! Bless you Joe always.

Joe's music not only gets better but it changes and go's into new avenues. His band here is back to four pieces but has a new freshness that you can tell this guy loves what he doing!

They have been playing Friend Better on WXPN FM. Good tune. Can’t wait to hear additional songs from disk.
