Reviews

  • An amazing achievement inspired by wintry rural and suburban decay

The entire album is fantastic but the last three songs on the album are the most majestic, melodic and mesmerizing, with tons of orchestra. The album makes the genre "orchestral rock" palatable and even desirable with its exquisite balance--not too much of one or the other--of electric guitars and strings.
  • The most ambitious album of the year

Musically and thematically The Blue Hour pushes out from the lazy suburbs of pop music and into the margins to explore life's liminal people. Brett Anderson's delivery has become progressively labored and less nuanced as the music has become a far more textured fabric from the blazing guitar driven days of Dog Man Star and Coming Up! With the heavy use of texturing over the last two albums since Bloodsports, Suede has entered uncharted territory, which, as a listener, requires a much more dedicated space for appreciating the ambiant nature of the album's overall sound. With it's dark ambiant themes and embrace of the most bleak recesses, this may be less an extension of Suede's evolution of Brit Pop, and more of the first novel reimagining of Goth music in the past thirty years.
  • Wow! Simply Wow.

I can’t even explain how amazing this album is to you. This is the new Suede-a mature and emotional sound that fits the current landscape. I’ve never heard Suede sound like this but it’s still quintessentially Suede. No other band could pull this off. This album is intense and starkly beautiful. Absolutely amazing. This is my new favorite Suede album. Dog Man Star is now #2.
