I was intrigued by the album art as a kid when it was released on compact disc and picked it up for that, and the single “electric barbarella”—the first ever song available for digital download. Right away I was hooked by the bass groove, sample and synth layers on the opening title track, with Nick Rhodes’ narrated lyrics. Each of the tracks has its own unique sound and story to tell, one of them, “Michael You’ve Got A Lot to Answer for”, a message to the late lead singer of INXS. The album is great listening front to back, or as a source for tracks to add to a variety of playlists. Everything from dance party to introspective. This should album should be in the collection of Duran Duran fans and musicians alike since it spotlights the talents of Simon’s voice, Nick’s genius and Warren’s unconventional approach to creating sounds.

Dark, dreary album. Still saw them three times on this tour. I wanted to like this album but a dud is a dud. The dismal performance of the album led in part to the dissolution of the band's contract with EMI after almost two decades.

Focus on "Who Do You Think You Are", "Michael You've Got A Lot To Answer For", and the beautifully dissonant "Midnight Sun" to find this band at their darkest, and most mature sound.
  • Even a weaker Duran is better than most.

Along with Red Carpet Massacre, I never really warmed up to Medazzaland but do give these 2 albums points for experimenting with style and soundscapes, which can't be said for other acts who were and are content to retread their exact formula. Despite being pigeonholed as a pop act, Duran always gave an effort with regard to delving into the avante guard.
  • In some ways better than The Wedding Album

This is a little more old school and they really shine on a lot of tracks. It's not the first 3 albums but it has that spirit. The first 5 tracks are very strong and the prolific Michael You Got a lot to Answer For is Amazing. Written about Michael Hutchense of Inxs just months before he died. This album would have been a big hit in the 80's or maybe as a quick follow up to the Wedding Album.

From the trippy intro to the beautifully constructed ballads Nick, Simon and Warren shine! John started with this album but left DD before completing this one. This is the closest DD has ever gotten musically to recreating a "Beatle" feel to an a album. Excellent album. Still waiting for the expanded version of this one.

This is a really exceptional album; their best in a very long time. I don't know what explains it, but the songwriting is strong, and the sound-design is highly original. The record has its own sound and atmosphere, and it does not sound like any other record by them or any other band. Highly recommended for fans of Duran Duran.
