Reviews

  • Doesn't feel new

I used to listen to The Shins a lot until I got sick of it. Then Point of Morrow came out and I liked that album a lot. This one feels like one of their old ones. Sure, it's good, but it doesn't feel like the music is progressing. Say what you want about Arctic Monkeys, but at least their sound continues to change over each album. This Shins album just feels like pulling from the same formula over and over again.

This album might be their best all around. A great selection of songs. Impossible to pick a favorite

Not nearly as original or creative as I had hoped.

This may be one of the shins' 1-2 best albums. Every song is good and they flow very well. Thank God for The Shins.

  • Very 80's

At first blush listening to his voice I feel like I am listening to the Talking Heads. Even some of the music I feel like it's a modern incarnation of The Talking Heads. Nothing negative to say about this album. It's not my style but as a person that listens to everything I can say this is a solid album.
  • The 80s Called...

They want their music back! But, we will keep it in 2017, because this albumi is really good. Mercer has evidently been thinking about 80s pop, as evidenced by the third track which would fit seamlessly on a late-80s Erasure album. But, the Shins are to be congratulated for challenging themselves and their audience. They show on the track "Dead Alive" that they could go on churning out Chutes Too Narrow remakes if they wanted, but would rather evolve. Only complaint is can't they release more than 1 album in 5 years? Guitar-pop greats R.E.M. released 5 classics over the same time span of 1983-1987. But I guess they weren't raising kids like Mercer is, so who am I to judge. Great job overall!

I'm really loving this new album. It is a unique combination of instruments and sounds. The result is a very catchy and memorable collection of songs. Great job, The Shins. Worth the wait.
  • A Beautiful Album

This is a really solid effort from my favorite songwriter/artist. James Mercer has grown in his approach to crafting a song both musically and lyrically. I will say though, this album did not strike me as powerfully as the other albums, and I think that is due to what I perceive as a slight absence of hard-hitting tunes such as prior examples of Phantom Limb, New Slang, or Simple Song. All in all, this album is great becuse there is nothing close to it nowadays, and that is what makes a Shins album special. A very charming album. You will remember it for years to come.
