I don't know what the reviewer was talking about. The songs get better and better with time—but so does Prine himself. He's a better singer in his later decades than he ever was in the early times. And these spare, stripped-down recordings showcase the songs—and Prine's skillfull delivery—so beautifully. The older records may be fine as historical documents, but these new readings are every bit as powerful and just as much of a pleasure to hear. Maybe more so.

"Rarely surpasses the original? " In my opinion they do. The originals in many cases were way over produced. These stripped down versions bring out the songs without the distractions. His voice may sound worn but to me that only adds to the feel of these wonderful songs
