To quote a former Deep Purple song "No No No"

In high school Deep Purple was by far my favorite band. Ritchie Blackmore was the reason I started taking guitar lessons and I still play to this day. That being said here's what I think....
I was livid when Roger Glover and Ian Gillan were let go. But I went out and bought the new album "Burn" and gave David Coverdale and Glenn Hughs a chance. I thought it was good but I wasn't crazy about it at first. Eventually I came to realize it was an excellent album as was the next one, "Stormbringer" (though not as good as "Burn").
But then Blackmore left and this thing came out. I bought it wanting to give it a chance after hearing how good the previous two above albums were.
But this was another story and it was a story that was heading in the wrong direction. The album did and still does sound like cacophony to me. Many of the songs sound disjointed and uneven, almost like they were written in 10-15 minutes. Plus the album sounds like it was recorded in a garage.
Coverdale's vocals sound atrocious. Like he's singing with a mouthful of marbles. Does not sound nearly as good as he sounded on the previous two albums. And he is an exceptional vocalist which leaves me scratching my head. But then again, everybody has a bad day every now and then.
There are a few tolerable parts, but not many. Which was why I have given it 2 stars instead of 1.
This one is a hard pass for me. Even the name of the album and the cover art is lame.

It's too bad TB couldn't shake his demons and continue on with DP. Tommy and GH definitely clicked on songwriting but this is our only taste. Not a great album but a cool mix of rock, jazz and fusion. Tommy's signature licks dominate throughout. Highlights include The Drifter, Lady Luck, Gettin' Tighter, This Time Around and You Keep on Moving. I agree with review, no classic DP hits here but nice departure which was and still is underrated.

Too bad Bolin and Coverdale only did one album together, They could have change the name from Deep Purple on this album. No other album like it up until that time.
Criminally Underrated

While being a huge departure from the metal juggernaut of the classic Mach lol albums, this album still delivers a monster funk and blues infused punch. This album has so much grove and soul. Tommy Bolin's only sin is that he is replacing the iconic Ritchie Blackmore.

Fabulous album with Coverdale, Hughes & newcomer Tommy Bolin craft a superb release.
Words fail me to express the superlatives of this release.
