Reviews

  • Very 80's sounding Yes

It sounds very much like Relayer in tonal quality, with the songs being a bit more focused. Steve Howe's acoustic guitar is sorely missed. But Alan White's drums sound fantastic. His best work with Yes. Horn's vocals will make you alternately think of Anderson or of video killing the radio star. If you like the classic years, you may not like this.

I ENJOY EVERY SONG ON THIS ALBUM. CHRIS SQUIRE, AND ALAN WHITE STAND OUT ON THIS ALBUM. MAGNIFICATION AND THE 2011 VERSION OF FLY FROM HERE ARE ALSO QUALITY YES ALBUMS. RIGHT YES FANS, ITUNES OFFER BOTH ALBUMS.

This is a very underrated album! I prefer it to Going for the One and Tormato.

I remember how bummed out we were when the new lineup came out. We said we didn't like it, but played it and played it all junior year. On my 4th vinyl copy now. Love this record.
  • The beginning of Yes part 2

No Jon Anderson or Rick Wakeman, no problem. By drafting in Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes (The Buggles), the band received a much needed shot of energy and new ideas. Steve Howe in particular sounds revitalized, and was also clearly listening to a lot of Police and Rush albums based on how Tempus Fugit and Machine Messiah sound. The rest of the album is also much more New Wave influenced, especially Run Through the Light which is the best of the rest of the tracks, pointing to where Yes would end up on 90125. After this Howe and Downes went on to form Asia, and Trevor Horn went into production work. It's not their best, but the album is far better than many Yes fans would have you believe. Since I can't give half stars, this gets a 3 but I would give it a 3.5 if I could.

With the departure of Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman, Yes had to do some reinvention. They decided to bring in the Buggles, who are Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes. This lineup turned Yes into a bit of a supergroup, with the remaining members being veterans of the band. However, this album became another disappointment overall, by not producing any hits or selling very many copies. Since it was such a disappointment, the members decided to split after the tour. But in just a few short years, Yes would return and create their diamond selling album!
