  • Wasted Talent

If i could describe this album, and the whole of Joss Stone's career, in two words it would be "wasted talent." She's an amazing vocal talent and she sings primarily in a terrible genre. The girl's got practically no range as she seems to have a singular-minded focus on the soul/R&B genre. I'd like to enjoy more of her songs, but i'm just not that into those two genres. I'd love to hear more rocking songs coming from her. Her song "Whatever Happened to the Heroes" is one of her best and, coincidentally, one of the farthest songs she sings from the R&B/Soul genres. Back in 2004/2005 i was all about Joss and her music. Recently, though, her stock has plummeted on my Ipod. Now that i'm older I have come to see that many of the lyrics on this album are shallow and the songs get old well in advance of listening to the whole album. Virtually none of these songs relate to me and seem to be written for the opposite of me. Each and every song is written from the perspective of a woman singing to a guy. Even though i love her voice, it's hard to enjoy those lyrics as a guy. Just a smidge of lyrical/thematic range would really be appreciated. This is her best album to date. Sadly, however, there's still only 2 keepers. Right to Be Wrong and Jet Lag are 3 star songs and the rest are throwaways. The album would get an even worse overall rating, but the two keepers happen to be two of her three best songs.
