  • A new fan

I heard one of his songs "broken hearted" came up in my iTunes Radio channel and I was captivated by his voice. I purchased the album shortly after and came away very impressed. The whole album felt tight and cohesive, with great production quality. The lyrics on the love songs were touching, and others like "above the radio" give commentary on current state of the music industry. All the songs have nice hooks and I really enjoyed the beautiful piano breaks he does. I find that "broken hearted" was definitely a stand out track. I would love to hear more from him in the future.

This album is really pretty good, a few songs I didn't love but generally speaking a strong release. Jon McLaughlin is a huge musical talent, no one with any sense could deny it. But he's not a talented songwriter, he says that himself in the "Promising Promises" video. He needed the support of a good label. But when he had his big break back in 2007, he got hooked up with Island Def Jam Records, an outfit suitable for picking out Justin Bieber's stage outfits but completely out of their league with a Jon McLaughlin. If Universal had just put him on the A&M or Capitol label, history would have been different. But they didn't, so of course Jon bailed after two records. The guy who should have been the next male pop superstar ends up producing his own independent releases for a small following. The music business is, um, let's say it's not a merit based industry.

This album is a classic! Jon shines on every song! Above the Radio is a great opener, and explains why he isn't a bigger name, because he CHOOSES to not be. OH! Showcases his high notes.. The Truth is raw FUNK!! Fire Away and Throw It on the Fire are perfect ballads!! Anybody Else is Amazing!! Seeing Jon performing these songs live only accentuated the record! If u don't have this one, buy it! Don't bootleg it! Jon NEVER disappoints!!

I was not happy overall with the album. The sound arrangements clouded the pure energy Jon normally brings. His normally energetic and brilliant piano playing felt muted by the way too loud strings and disorienting vocals. Eh, I'm sure with more time I'll get over it. It wasn't worth pre-ordering.

but I feel like this isn't as strong as his last album. I loved the songs in Promising Promises/Forever If Ever. I definitely feel in love with his songs that really touched upon far more personal experiences like "If Only I" and "Beautiful Disaster". However, this album doesn't quite catch my ear like Indiana and Promising Promises did. Personally, I liked OK Now better than this one. I was able to enjoy a little more than half the songs there. I've already tried listening to this album a few times and enjoy only about four of the songs. I feel a little disappointed with this one. But at least I know he is likely to come out with better music later on. He has too much talent to be writing a bunch of filler songs.

This guy consistently proves to be one of the most powerful craftsman in the music industry. His voice is fantastic. His songwriting is surprising and prolific. His songs are not overproduced or autotuned. Too bad there aren't more like him.

I have so much admiration for Jon because he creates beautiful songs. His music is so well balanced that puts you in full understanding of his communication. His music really tells you the beauty of what he want to communicate through his art.
