Keating is what inspires me to keep playing. To keep striving to be the musician I want to be. Listening to her music I feel like nothing can stop me. Nothing will stand in my way.

A former orchestral cello player, Zoe Keating spent years chasing after perfection. She certainly obtained it, as her talent robustly shows. But to her, the note fragments that are avoided by most instrumentalists -- in an almost constant effort to reproduce the sterile notes most musical compositions demand -- helped more than they hurt. It was her opinion that by keeping the "imperfection" it added a sort of signature to the sounds. And, as far as I'm concerned, she was right. When you listen to her music, it's as though a note comes at you and flutters behind the soft throb or bow of another. "Fern" is a perfect example. She accomplishes this partly by adding her skews to notes, but also by layering recordings of her cello playing different riffs of a song. Think Enya only with a cello instead of a voice. She also uses a cello like a stunt driver would use a car -- making new but fully welcomed sounds in various, unconventional ways. The product is a deep complexity complimented with upper midtones and wooden shell-drum slaps that massage your eardrums while keeping them awake with brief fades, surfacings, or tempo string-scratchings. It's been said that music is the bridge between heaven and earth. Once you listen you'll know which side of the bridge you're on. Simply put, this may make you feel like your view of the world -- or possibly yourself -- just became much wider. There is only one caution I can suggest to those who may debate listening to her albums: it will be difficult to find other music you enjoy as much as hers.
  • Happy ears, dancing spirit

This music is moving and evocative on so many levels. It makes me a better listener. The mind and spirit alternately relax, dance around, jump up, and lie still, while the ears remain perked (I swear I've felt my ears move).

I'm a sucker for any song from any genre that includes the cello. There is something about any song with a cello that gives it instant appeal. I was introduced to Zoe through the soundtrack of "Ghost Bird". It was quite moving and I knew I had to hear more. I'm glad I found Zoe Keating.

One of the best pieces of music in my entire library. I've shared it with many people and introduced them to the subtle and powerful beauty that is Zoe Keating!

Keating combines a crystalline vision with marvelous musicianship and creativity. Her music is one of very few that I can both burrow into and explore, but can also listen to while working. This is music that keeps refreshing itself and stays interesting.
