Really enjoy this album. J Mascis is such a incredible guitar player especially seeing him live & loud & ears bleeding. It is nice to see him in a different light & hear a whole album of just acoustic. Solos sound great with the fuzz box & effects with the acoustic. This album really grows on you. Great to listen in the car on a long drive . If you don't already own it.. J Mascis Martin & Me ( Live ) another acoustic album to add to your collection. Classic Dinosaur Jr. & a couple of covers. Check it Out
  • Record of the Moment

This album feels right: The tracks are personal and expansive. Remember when albums carried the weight of their times? I'm only a few years younger than J. Mascis; and I truly believe _Several Shades of Why_ carries itself like the album of my generation... now. All the relevant stuff is there -- the queries (note all the questions), the assertions ("Listen to Me"), and the echoes (here, acoustic) capture the moment. This album doesn't have the answers, doesn't scream for your attention, and doesn't land in your lap. No, J Mascis isn't artistically stuck in the past and he's not waiting for an epiphany. I, on the other hand, have been waiting for an album like this for quite some time.

I pre-ordered this from sub pop and got It last Friday like the other reviewer. After about 5 listens to this album I can proudly say this is a keeper. Every track is good. J's voice sounds great as ever. He still has that lazy draw in his singing that makes the listener almost feel sympathy for the man. His guitar playing is excellent as always. He has a wonderful blend of acousitc playing mixed with some electric acoustic playing. There's not a solo on every song, but when he does solo it is in all its fuzzy gloriousness. Most of the tracks are very strong. Some riffs do sound like they were recycled from his previous songs, but that's not a bad thing. This album really grows on you. I even enjoyed more when I was riding down the road listening to it. In my opinion, J Mascis can do no wrong. He has excellent song writing ablities and extrordinare guitar playing. J almost reminds me of Eric Clapton. He's comfortable with his playing as he gets older and really does it for the love of the music. If you liked any of J's acoustic stuff on his Dino jr. albums you will not be disapointed. My favorite track on this album is get it done, but buy the whole album it's worth it.
