Heard about the Jennys from Pandora - thank you Pandora! Went to Philly to see them, same venue where they "interviewed" Heather for the band in the restroom LOL. They are just awesome to see live - the songs totally come to life. They are all three very talented as well - this is not a group that should bother using the autotune when they record. Anyway, Heather adds some real depth to the group. Her deep, milky vocals fit in really well and stand out just right. Her songwriting uses a few more jazz chords, so it has given the Jennys' sound a small shift, but I'd say for the better. It doesn't seem to matter who their alto is though; their harmonies are always epic. If you are looking at specific tracks, I'd say the following are must-haves: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, and 13. The rest are should-haves. Enjoy!

Heard the Wailin Jenny's for the first time on Prairie Home Companion today. Loved the song, "Storm Comin," so I had to look them up. Rarely, if ever, have I purchased an album where I loved every song. The quality of their voices and the sweetness of their harmony make this one I will listen to time and again.
  • So perfect. First minutes of first track brought tears...

Outta the park again for the Jennys. So much pathos, so much stoicism - and still dogged hold on joy and commitment to beauty. Really, really perfect. Was stoked to see "Storm Comin" on this album after hearing them perform it live last year.

Just a beautiful compilation of all the different writing styles of these ladies. They are so complimentary too. The song "What has been done" is sooooo over the top good from every perspective. Writing, production, performance.....When it comes to the Jennys, it doesn't get much better than that song....

First, these ladies are so much fun to listen to live. You should take the time to travel to their shows & meet them - they appreciate the interaction (and they appreciate loyal fans). "Bright Morning Stars" is a wonderful CD, of course. Extremely rich vocals and instruments that just provide the correct amount of sonic fill. Not too heavy, not too light. They've been trying out many of these songs on their recent tour and I'm happy to say that these recordings are first rate renditions of the songs. Nicky, Ruth & Heather (with instrumentalist "man-Jenny" Jeremy on this CD) know how to wrap their voices around the tunes and make the most of each others' talents. I certainly hope they can continue their partnership long into the future. My life will be better if they do.
  • Amazing talent and lyrics. Absolutely beautiful music. Seriously. Beautiful.

Wow! Just saw them live in Crested Butte!! Absolutely amazing. Great stories behind their songs, inspiring talent and beautiful voices. Seriously. If you get the chance, go see them live. Go. Now. And if not, at least buy these CDs!

If you are fimiliar with The Wailin' Jennys, you know they are famous for their amazing harmonies that if heard live, will drop your jaw to the ground. This new album sounds a little different to me then "40 Days," it is a little softer (almost bluesy in a country way) and seems to focus a little more on their instruments then previous albums. That is not to say that you wont hear their harmonies which are still loud and clear, it is just interesting to hear the drums and other new additions. If you are looking for something a lot like their older stuff, I recommend "Bird Song," but I love to hear artists dabbling in new things, so I recommend it all to folks who are generally excited about the Jennys.
