Honestly, a Christmas album is where you go when you are out of ideas and need to make money. I have definitely heard less inspired Christmas albums, but that does not mean I fully condone Tull making this one

Bourre! My god!, How did my life go so far off track? Through my youth in the 70's (the first concert I ever went to was Jethro Tull at Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon in 1976) through a couple of shows I caught around 1996 I was a diehard fan of this band! I mean, I knew every word of every song from Thick As A Brick on. I once wrote out every word of Thick As A Brick on a classroom board in my high school to prove to a classmate I could do it and not miss a word or mess up a line. And yet... And yet it's come to be 2013 and I've just heard this version of Bouree for the first time. It made me sad to realize that the last thirteen years —good years to be sure — could have been great years had they been laced with an occasional appreciation of this awesome bit of music It is a thing of consummate beauty here. It brought tears to my eyes. A mature work of virtuosity that surpasses the original classic by a mile. Not a word to memorize either!

Anyone familiar with Ian Anderson knows well his enmity toward the church and his view of God as nonexistent or absent. Yes the tunes may sound festive but an album to remind us the meaning of Christmas--Christ's birth into the world, leading ultimately to salvation--this is far from it. Unless your idea of Christmas is simply kindness to others I the cold weather and festivities--then enjoy the band's prog rock tightness, and think happy thoughts.
