  • Donna Summer at her peak

Donna Summer had a hard time getting his album heard on the radio when it first got released since it was the same year Mariah Carey released “All I want for Christmas is you”. So of course Donna’s solemn collection of heartfelt Christmas melodies didn’t stand a chance. Especially since there is not one single dance song in this collection which maybe some first time listeners would expect from the Queen of Disco. What we do get are some Christmas standards and a few newly written songs by Donna herself. But there is no denying Donna’s superb voice and delivery on this album are probably the very best of her career. Summer has always been a very unappreciated and quite underrated talent but she was capable of taking on any type of music genre and here in “Christmas Spirit” we get gospel Donna taking us to her singing roots with jaw dropping vocal delivery and truly places here among the very best female singers on our time. And forever. Highly recommend this holiday collection.

I bought this cd nearly 25 years ago, upon its release and also gave many copies to friends and family as Christmas gifts. This collection of songs still sounds as wonderful today as they did then. I think that the fact that Donna was known to be such a devout christian is probably the reason that these songs are sung with so much love and conviction and when i listen to these songs, especially the track BREATH OF HEAVEN my eyes always begin to fill and the true meaning of CHRISTMAS SPIRIT shines through.
