This album, like Target Earth before it, is strong evidence that Voivod have entered a creative renaissance. The band sounded fantastic on their previous album Target Earth. But The Wake is even better, the songwriting is more nuanced and complex than it's predecessor, yet still aggressive. Sonically tt would have fit right in after the Nothingface album and recalls much of the classic Voivod sound. But Voivod are not on a nostalgia trip. The Wake may be informed by the Voivod of the classic years but it looks forward more than it looks back. I would have preferred a more aggressive mix. But that's a minor complaint. The Wake is Voivod at its most imaginative yet and if you're a fan of progressive metal or the band, you gotta pick this up!

I've been a Voivod fan for years ever since Nothingface came out in the late 80's. Angel Rat and The Outer Limits were great follow-ups to the album and the band has been up and down ever since with some of their experimental sounds. This album though, returns to their roots, and if I didn't know any better I'd say any one of these songs could seamlessly fit on the Nothingface album. Every song is incredible and I've listened to this over a dozen times since its release which I can't say about any albums nowadays. Solid comeback!

This is true Voivod - the best of what they do, done excellently. I can hardly believe it. On the same level as Nothingface & Angel Rat. Kuddos, guys!

Hope they keep on going first 3 tunes are great. Piggy has been channeled through D. His songwriting is stellar.
