When I first bought this album in the mid 1990s, I played the crap out of it. It stands the test of time.

I know a lot of Pretenders songs; Back on the Chain Gang, Don't Get Me Wrong, and so on. My absolute favorite song, by far & without a doubt, is I'll Stand by You. This song reaches in and grabs you by the heart and, no matter who you are, if you've ever been loved, or ever loved anyone, then you'll relate to this song. This band can rock your a** off, then turn around and write a song that is so deep and so true. I love the band, but it's Chrissie Hynde and that awesome voice that makes them what they are. This album is a must, as is most of their other ones. Buy, buy, buy!!

Before you call something overrated learn how to spell it. This album is way better than tons of better music out there.

Chrissie Hynde dedicated Vegan and leader of The Pretenders is the gold standard in the rock world. Her rubber band-like vibrating contralto singing voice is one of a kind.. She takes no prisoners with "Last Of The Independents" undoubtably one of their best albums released to date. Don't be fooled by the year it was launched thinking it will sound dated-it will still rock you from it's first song to it's last! Her comin' at you rock n' roll attitude is wrapped up in Money Talk with it's tough girl lyrics and Night In My Veins (you can almost smell the midnight air!) but she also sings songs of love penned in passion... I'll Stand By You was the big hit but it's the other songs that showcase the brilliant rockstar she is... Xooniatrueblood

I heard both versions on the radio, and I have to say, Carrie underwoods version is alot better. I wish it was available on iTunes :((
